The Libertarian Party is 48 Years Old

The Libertarian Party of the United States was founded on December 11, 1971, in a living room in Colorado Springs. A group of determined Liberty advocates led by David F. Nolan spent five months meeting, debating, and amending what would become the Libertarian Party’s first platform. Recognizing that the Republicans and Democrats had abandoned the original principles of Liberty the American founding fathers had set forth, this group, including John Hospers, Ed Crane, Manuel Klausner, Murray Rothbard, Roy Childs, Tonie Nathan, and Jim Dean, formed a party dedicated to the ideas of all markets being completely free. Today we are celebrating our 48th birthday.

New Marijuana Initiative for 2020

Who remembers Jack Herer? Perhaps you saw the 1999 documentary about his alter ego, the "Emperor of Hemp." Jack Herer created several versions of a marijuana initiative over his lifetime; unfortunately it was Proposition 64 (Adult Use of Marijuana Act) which passed in 2004, creating a set of laws so dubious that voters were uncertain whether to be for or against it. Now, proponents for the Cannabis Hemp Heritage Act 2020 want to set things right. They are basing this new petition on the one created by Jack Herer. At a recent meeting the California Libertarian Party endorsed the petition.

New Central Area Coordinator

Jon Prosser has been elected to fill the Central Area Coordinator position recently vacated by Justin Quigly. His role is to work with all Central Area LP county organizations providing information and assistance. As reported earlier, the LPVC's regional affiliation was changed from the Southern Area to the Central Area. This decision, initiated at a past state convention, was made to more evenly distribute California's LP members among the three Area Coordinators. Jon will oversee ten counties including Ventura County.

What Is the Ideal Strategy for the Libertarian Party? - Free Minds and Free Markets

"The Libertarian Party should never again put up national candidates whose views are similar to those of Gary Johnson and Bill Weld."

That was the resolution of a public debate hosted by the Soho Forum in New York City at the SubCulture Theater on September 10, 2019. It featured comedian and podcast host Dave Smith and Nicholas Sarwark, the chairman of the Libertarian National Committee. Soho Forum director Gene Epstein moderated.

Arguing for the affirmative was Dave Smith, whose 2017 comedy special Libertas was ranked as the number 1 comedy special on iTunes for three weeks. Smith is the host of the popular libertarian podcast Part of the Problem and a co-host of the comedy podcast Legion of Skanks.

Nicholas Sarwark argued for the negative. Sarwark is currently serving his third term as chairman of the Libertarian National Committee, which is the executive body of the Libertarian Party.

It was an Oxford-style debate: The audience votes on the resolution at the beginning and end of the event, and the side that gains the most ground is victorious. Smith won the night by convincing 20 percent of the audience, while Sarwark convinced 16.8 percent.

The Soho Forum, which is sponsored by the Reason Foundation, is a monthly debate series at the SubCulture Theater in Manhattan's East Village.
