Earlier this month it was confirmed that the Libertarian Party ticket of Gov. Gary Johnson and Gov. William Weld will be on the ballot this November in all fifty states as well as the District of Columbia. That means that our Libertarian nominees, along with Donald Trump and Mike Pence for the Republicans, and Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine for the Democrats, are the ONLY candidates for president and vice president who will appear on the November 8 ballots in every single state plus DC.
It’s been twenty years since the Libertarian Party presidential and vice presidential nominees made the ballot in all fifty states, last achieved in 1996 by Harry Browne and his running mate, Jo Jorgensen. “Thanks to the commitment of Libertarian Party members, donors, and volunteers, we’ve overcome the ballot access hurdles put in place by the two old parties,” said Nicholas Sarwark, Chair of the Libertarian National Committee. It took thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars, but we did it to give every American a Libertarian on their ballot so they don’t have to waste their vote on either of the two bullies the old parties nominated for President.”
A big thank you goes out to national chair Sarwark for making ballot access his priority and for seeing it through. This was no small feat. His office fought heavy regulations in several states and dealt with legal (illegal) wrangling in others. They had to spend money on lawyers and signature gatherers. Their eyes had to be on the clock every minute. I thank them for believing it could be done again. Ballot access has been so easy for us in California that we take it for granted. But there are many states who have to fight for it each election cycle. This is definitely something for which to be grateful. It gives us real credibility and it gives the Johnson/Weld team a much more hopeful start.
