Tibor Machan—philosopher, professor, writer, editor, radio host, and political advisor—has died at the age of 77. Born in Hungary in 1939, he came to this country as a refugee from its communist regime. In 1968 in nearby Santa Barbara he helped co-found Reason magazine, now the leading libertarian periodical in America. Tibor had “a personal fire for individual liberty and a free society” says Nick Gillespie, a current Reason editor. His contributions include a compilation of libertarian essays called “The Libertarian Alternative,” and a defense of the writings of Ayn Rand. Mr. Machan spoke at our California State Libertarian convention in San Diego several years ago. He believed strongly in limited government and spent his lifetime educating against those who would violate humanity.
